Giovanni Panerai founded Panerai in eighteen hundred sixty. He opened the first watch-maker’s workshop in 1860 in Florance on the Ponte-alle-Grazie. It was during this period that the Switzerland’s most famous chronometer manufacturers were befriended for business purposes.
Leon Francesco, Giovanni’s son succeeded him.
However, it was Giovanni’s grandson, Guido Panerai who expanded the business. Under him, the company specialized in precision instruments. He also got a deal to become the official time keeping equipment provider to various Italian government defense organizations. Under him, Panerai also expanded to conduct experiments on luminescent materials. And was successful in achieving the luminescence through a mixture of different chemical substances like sulphides and bromides, which was later named Radiomir. When this substance is enclosed into small glass pipes, it increases its resistance over time, this mixture is a principal ingredient of many of the patents that were henceforth filed under this categories all over the world.
However, not until 1943 did the model of the 1st Panerai chronograph, the Mare Nostrum, was manufactured. This was designed for officers in the deck. The Mare Nostrum never went into production owing to effects in the war. However, in the early 1940s the Model went into production and the water resistance up to 200m was achieved. This was a great achievement in those days.
